Named for Esther Cons, who arrived in Bunbury in 1869 at the suggestion of the Anglican Bishop of Melbourne and promptly established Torrington College — the first girls' school in the town. She married Robert Forrest in 1875 and made Grittleton Lodge her home, becoming one of Bunbury's most active civic figures. A keen horsewoman, suffrage supporter and tireless advocate for the Women's Christian Temperance Union, Esther brought energy, education and ambition to early Bunbury society.
